"Taking your first steps of faith into the unknown"

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,” Ephesians 3:20 ESV

One of my favorite bands, from the early 90’s, is Out of the Grey. I started listening to their music again recently and the song "Walk By Faith" spoke to me in my current situation.  As I looked at my future, my family, my church and community I could hear God asking me, “Are you looking through the past or the future?” I wondered, has all that I have been through just been for this moment, this season in my life I am in now? Is this where it all comes together and fulfills more than I could ever ask God to do or imagine with my mind? Whatever God has for me, it is not sitting in my past. It is in my present and future with Him.

Many have experienced "the new" with God. Once bound by the past pains, loss and failures, putting your trust in Jesus has given you the opportunity to step out and go where you have not been before. You can now believe God for things that once you thought were impossible. You may be one who is coming off the trail of grief and loss. That path has knocked everything out of you to where you have felt like you could not take another step, and you have decided to camp forever in the loss instead of the adventure of the whatever. You think that you have stumbled upon God on this journey, but in reality He has been with you every step of the way to lead you to this edge of the unknown. The “Whatever” He has for you.

Look at these lyrics from Walk by Faith by Out of the Gray.

I'm standing on the edge of whateverWhatever He has planned for meMy next step will be measuredWith confidence in the unseenLike dancing on the edge of foreverI have nothing left to loseFlying free as a featherA vagabond in beautiful shoes

Maybe this is you today. You have been brought to the edge of the unknown, but with God, you know it is good. Not easy. Not without more trials, but it is good. He has plans for you and as you walk with Him, you will walk in a confidence called faith. What is faith? The Bible says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1 ESV). Faith is not looking at the troubles we see now and allowing them to dictate our course. It is also not relying on what we have already experienced thinking there is nothing more to look forward to. Faith is also not mustered by us simply deciding to think differently. Faith is a gift. God gives faith for us to believe Him for whatever He has for us. This is where mourning is turning into dancing. The garment of heaviness is being replaced with the garment of praise. You are ready to walk where He leads with peace on your feet, wherever the whatever takes you.

You are standing on the edge of whatever. Your next step is one to take with God, not for Him. Ask Him for faith to believe, trust and expect with confidence what you hope for. Peace, fruitfulness, restoration, freedom and more. God has plans for you. He is taking you off the trail of trial and into the great unknown. Get ready.
